Telavi (Georgian: თელავი) is the principal city and administrative center of Georgia's eastern province of Kakheti. Its population consists of some 21,800 inhabitants (as of 2002). The city is located at the foot of the hills of Tsiv-Gombori to 500-800 meters above sea level.

During this period, the city's economy was based mainly on small industries (leather painting, ceramics production, wine making, etc.), trade and agriculture. The population of the city had about 12,000 inhabitants at the end of the nineteenth century (including about 2,000 Armenians, mostly refugees from the Ottoman Empire, and 10,000 ethnic Georgians)
