Telavi
 
Telavi (Georgian: თელავი) is the principal city and administrative center of Georgia's eastern province of Kakheti. Its population consists of some 21,800 inhabitants (as of 2002). The city is located at the foot of the hills of Tsiv-Gombori to 500-800 meters above sea level.

The earliest archaeological findings from Telavi date back to the Bronze Age. One of the earliest surviving accounts of Telavi is the second century AD, the Greek geographer Ptolemy, who mentions the name Teleda (a reference to Telavi). Telavi began to become a very important and of great political and administrative in the eighth century AD. Interesting facts about Telavi in the records provided by Arab geographer Al-Muqaddasi X century, mentions Telavi along with such important cities of the Caucasus as Tbilisi that time, Shamkhor, Ganja, Shirvan and Shemakha. Speaking of the population of Telavi, Al-Muqaddasi notes that mostly consisted of Christians.
 
Russian rule
In 1801, after the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti was annexed by the Russian Empire, Telavi lost its status as capital. In the nineteenth century the city was the administrative center status (uyezd) gubernia in Tbilisi. During this period, the city's economy was based mainly on small industries (leather painting, ceramics production, wine making, etc.), trade and agriculture. The population of the city had about 12,000 inhabitants at the end of the nineteenth century (including about 2,000 Armenians, mostly refugees from the Ottoman Empire, and 10,000 ethnic Georgians)
